Declan Rice is a centre half
|
I’ve heard Souness spout this shite when he’s been a pundit on our games over the past few years. Every time he’s said it, it’s made me chuckle as he is obviously a chancer who doesn’t watch any of our games. Now he’s had his nonsense published in the mail:

Rice is a sweeper - the problem is nobody plays that system anymore and if they do it's a ham fisted, shit version by an inferior manager who thinks he has won everything...

Found it hard at times today to work out whether it was Aguerd or Rice intercepting, tackling etc.
Would it be wrong to think about giving Aguerd a go in midfield?

Souness is a bitter old Scotch fart with anything to do with West Ham I remember years ago when he played for Liverpool he said he always enjoyed playing against us as it was a guaranteed two points. Come to think of it he was probably right.

Souness lost all credibility when he not only signed, but played a player in a Premier League match on the basis he claimed to be George Weah’s cousin, and from that point on, any opinion he has on football is best ignored.

I make ted the weather right.
Saying Rice has a best position doesn't contradict that at all

Conversation on BT sport right now about it just being a formality he’s leaving. It’s probably true but it’s really disrespectful to us to have this open conversation.
Also akinfenwa is absolutely shit as a talking head. Also the cunt supports Liverpool. Why?

Not sure how good Rice is between the sticks but apart from that he's so versatile he could play any where.

"You do whatever semantic gymnastics you need to do to score your points son."
Semantic gymnastics?
From the context of the conversation, it's clear that you think this phrase is something impressive, but you don't actually know what it means.

I don't agree with him obviously, but the bloke is paid to give his opinion.
The cynic in me also believes from time to time that columnists deliberately say something a bit out there to get the publicity. More publicity= more readers.

Souness’s stance on Rice is baffling and it’s like he can’t bear to admit he was wrong so he’s just doubling down on it.
I also think there’s a bit of a Liverpool bias creeping in there and he can’t handle people comparing Rice favourably to his boy Henderson.

As Nagel said. Rice's role is different, as is football in general since Souness' days.
He'd be asked to not only play another way, but restricted from being the nasty bullying cunt he was.
There is no way Souness would double his tally nowadays, so he reckons.
I think if Rice played further forward, he could have more goals and assists in him though.

I have never said play him as a CB except in an emergency.
You, I suppose, would rather not play centre backs than use someone whose best position is somewhere else.
And yes, you did say that Rice was shit, and that his natural position was centre back.
"I never said he was shit".
Er, "after about three games in the first team where he'd been mostly crap."
You said he was shit, and you're STILL saying he was "mostly crap"

I've never said he was shit, I thought that relying on a kid who had never played in midfield as our starting midfielder was a shit idea. 99 times out of 100 it would be. In fact we had to endure two years of him being pretty average there before he became the player he is now. I also didn't like him having his hand out for more money after about three games in the first team where he'd been mostly crap.
But yeah lets play him a CB right? Deflect Deflect!

He was at one point but not now. Would have have made a fantastic libero in that system.

I'm sure Rice can "do a job" as an emergency CH.
Nevertheless, his best position is not CH, and nothing I've ever said can be construed as saying otherwise.

I don't read anything Sounness writes.
Rice himself said a few years ago that his preferred position is CH. However, given how he has developed as a midfielder, I'm sure he is happy playing that role now. Towards the end of his career I could see him easily revert to CH .

No, Vexed, everyone remembers that you insisted Rice was shit, and being played out of position when he first made the first team.
If you've forgotten that, then I'm sure others will be able to remind you that you are one of the few people on WHO who knows less about football than Souness.
